How booking a fire risk assessment works

Booking a Garrison FM fire risk assessment takes 4 steps, from first enquiry to the reviewed report.

  1. Step 1: Send the building details

Building type, postcode, number of buildings and the date of your current assessment. We reply with a fixed price.

  2. Step 2: Agree a visit date

We confirm the date and access. You send floor plans, the current assessment and service records if you have them.

  3. Step 3: Site visit

A qualified, registered fire risk assessor walks the building. The inspection is non-destructive unless agreed in advance.

  4. Step 4: Report in 5 working days

A second senior assessor reviews the report before issue. We write reports in Cindr, our own software, which is why they arrive within 5 working days.

The Garrison FM free check looks at 2 things in your current fire risk assessment: its date and the standard it follows. We tell you whether it predates the recording rules in force since 1 October 2023, or cites PAS 79-2, which BS 9792:2025 replaced for housing in August 2025.

Fire risk assessment questions

More detail in the fire safety guides.

How much does a fire risk assessment cost in Reading?

Garrison FM prices start at £295 ex VAT for a small office or shop, £325 for the common parts of a small block of flats and £395 for an HMO. Care homes and larger or higher-risk buildings are quoted after a short call, because the visit length depends on floor area, storeys and how people are evacuated. The price covers the visit, the report and the second assessor's review.

How long does it take to get the report?

Garrison FM issues the written report within 5 working days of the site visit. A second senior assessor reviews every report before it is sent, and that review happens inside the 5 days. The report sets out the findings, a risk rating and an action plan with a priority for each action.

How often does a fire risk assessment need reviewing?

The law sets no fixed interval. Article 9(3) of the Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person to review the assessment regularly, and again if there is reason to think it is no longer valid or after a significant change. Government guidance for purpose-built blocks of flats suggests a yearly review for higher-risk blocks and blocks over 4 storeys.

Who can carry out a fire risk assessment?

The responsible person can carry out the assessment if they are competent, or appoint a competent assessor. No law yet requires assessors to be on a register. The government consulted on mandatory certification for fire risk assessors from March to June 2026 and has not published its response. Garrison FM uses qualified, registered assessors.

Does a fire risk assessment have to be written down?

Yes. Since 1 October 2023 every responsible person must record the full fire risk assessment in writing, whatever the size of the business. The record must also name anyone engaged to make or review the assessment, and their organisation. Garrison FM reports name the assessor and the reviewing assessor for this reason.

What is the free check of my current assessment?

Send us your current fire risk assessment and we check 2 things: the date it was carried out or last reviewed, and the standard it follows. We tell you whether it predates the October 2023 recording rules, or cites PAS 79-2, which BS 9792:2025 replaced for housing. The check is free and there is no obligation to book.
